Stories are central to the Modern Hotel. We tell the story of how the Modern came to exist each time a guest inquires about the pictures on the wall. Our story is planted deep in Idaho, in the rich history of the west, Basque boarding houses, sheep herding, immigration, the American dream and stories told around the campfire by pioneers.
Beginning this summer, the Modern Hotel and Boise Radio will host Modern Campfire Stories, produced by Christian Winn. Christian, who also produces Storyfort, the literary add-on to this year’s Treefort Music Fest, has invited writers from around Idaho to read their work. Original fiction, creative nonfiction, poetry, screenplays and more will be offered from Boise’s rich literary community. On Monday nights throughout the summer and fall, you camp out around the fires in the courtyard of the Modern Hotel and hear the best writers Idaho has to offer.
Final 2ndfloor 2Only three days left until Modern Art 2014 and things are heating up. This year we are please to be included in “24 Bicycles in 24 Hours” sponsored by the Boise Bicycle Project and Boise Gives. Their goal is to give 24 bicycles to 24 children who otherwise couldn’t afford one. The bike in our lobby is for Elma, age 8, who gave the Boise Bicycle Project a description of her dream bike, “pink and purple with a little basket.” You can help Elma by giving a donation to BBP in her name. BBP is a community-oriented cooperative that promotes the personal, social and environmental benefits of bicycling. BBP built the bike to her specifications and it’s adorable. If the donation threshold is reached it will be donated to Elma on the day of Modern Art.
Speaking of which, below is the map of rooms listing the artist who will occupy and transform them. From what we’ve seen so far it is going to be a banner year.
Only 10 days left before Modern Art. This week we’re featuring artist Ben Gin being interviewed by his alter ego KAOSEACE. That’s Kaos and Peace together. Ben will have a room at Modern Art again this year. No word yet as to whether KOASEACE will make an appearance. But the video is hysterical. So check it out.
Modern Art 2014 is now only two weeks and two days away and the artists and their ‘artners are busy working on their projects for this year’s event. Artists have now been assigned to all the rooms and outside spaces and we will post a map of the space assignments soon. As we promised last week, here is a link to filmmaker Andy Lawless’ take on last years Modern Art. We hope you enjoy it.
Hello Modern Art Fans,
Nearly every year filmmaker Andy Lawless has documented Modern Art and over time has produced a number of great videos that capture the flavor and quirky nature of the proceedings. You can watch his work and those of other artists at our Vimeo channel:
Next week we hope to have Andy’s newest piece documenting last year’s Modern Art. Besides a good look at the art and spaces, it includes interviews with the artists who participated. So, check us out next week for more of Andy’s fine work.
